You can, but it is really dangerous, because if the monkey has lived with you for years, it is still a wild animal and can attack at anytime. There is a lady who got attacked by an chimpanzee, and it was very scary because it scratched her face and everything was bad, so if I were you I wouldn’t get one just for safety reasons.

Bad idea. Monkeys belong in the wild or in a reputable zoo, not as a pet!

OK just your general attitude tells me you are not prepared to own a monkey. You need the following to own one:

Experience, working with monkeys in zoos or wildlife sanctuaries. They are very complex animals to care for, the wrong diet can kill them and they are very aggressive.
Tonnes of money. A marmoset will cost at least a grand, squirrel monkeys and the like eight times that at least. They cost several thousands a year in vet fees and specialist feed to keep.
A specialist exotics vet, such vets are hard to come by and expensive, you may have to travel hours or days to find such a vet.
Correct licenses. In some places, all primate are illegal as pets. In other, you will require correct dangerous wild animal licensing, public liability insurance and CITES documentation/
Another monkey. Its cruel to keep just one, they are social.
A massive heated outdoor enclosure made of EXTREMELY STRONG metal (ie, not bird mesh) that allows access from the sun for UV rays. Such an enclosure costs thousands to build.
Balls of steel. Because monkeys like to rip them off. Seriously. Once they are past the cute baby stage, monkeys are dangerously and sexually aggressive. A small monkey is quite willing and capable of scratching your eyes out or tearing your throat open. Dont underestimate them because they are small and cute, they are capable of weilding tools and have very sharp claws and teeth.

There is no such thing as a “trained” monkey. Monkeys used in movies and circuses are usually very young, young monkeys are tame and eager to please if raised amongst humans. once they hit sexual maturity they become dangerous and most are dumped or euthanised or end up in a rescue centre. They can live 50 years, so you’d have a few years of a cute baby animal following by about 35-40 years of a screaming, vicious hellion.

is that what you want in a pet?
