Question by CYE: Internship interview need to bring press release but I’ve never written one?
I have an interview tomorrow for a marketing and promotions internship this summer, and it sounds amazing. The information about the internship before I applied wasn’t very detailed, but my major is marketing so I’m pretty sure I’m qualified. but they told me to bring a “writing sample (ie press release)” and I’ve never written a press release or even taken a public relations class.
My friend has written one before and I’m looking up how to write one so I can just make one although I’m not sure what to make it on haha.
anyway I’m wondering is it ok if I just make one up, and what should I say about never learning it?
Answer by MacKenzie
As a marketing major myself, I would recommend doing one on a topic in our industry. Perhaps one of the new social media platforms? Such as Pinterest, Digg, Reddit, etc. I would cover all aspect of it, particularly how that social media could benefit a business. Remember though, a press release is a story of a new event/product/thing not an article… Make sure and make it interesting.

Question by O Smart One: Why do musicians release singles in physical form?
What is are the reasons for musicians to keep releasing singles in physical copy (not digital singles!)? They only contain several songs at most, and the main song is on the studio album in nearly all cases. So why do people buy singles, do they really want to pay several Euros for a CD with maybe an acoustic/remix version, or some cases an unreleased song? Are singles mostly purchased by die-hard fans?
Answer by Jmz
Honestly, your question is a very valid one and the very fact that you thought to ask it shows that the music business is changing right before our eyes. Record companies used to release singles in advance of major albums so radio stations could advertise the new album (building a fan base before the record actually dropped) and die-hard fans could find something to spend their money on.
Nowadays, so many artists are releasing demo tracks, “behind the scenes” videos and remixes on their websites and social media networks. YouTube has done alot to damage radio stations and satellite radio has diluted the airwaves (much like digital TV did to network television).
In short, the material we used to look for on singles is now available every day online. People still buy CDs (for now), but I predict that a new form of MP3 (with better sound quality) will replace CDs entirely as the primary media for professional music. Soon, we’ll all be downloading our songs instead of buying them from a store.
Still, in the meantime, a generation or two of “old schoolers” will want to have a CD in their hands. It’s what they’re used to and they will have a hard time giving it up.
